The HWBD 7-Day Fresh Food Schedule

A high-quality daily seed mix is the core of your hamster’s diet. However, offering safe fresh vegetables, safe proteins, and occasional treats mimics their natural foraging behavior. Use our safe weekly rotation chart below!

  • The Golden Rule: Fresh food is a supplement, not a replacement. Always provide 1-2 tablespoons of a high-quality seed mix (check our seed mix formulae) daily.

  • Portion Control: Fresh vegetable pieces should be no larger than your thumbnail.

  • Wash Thoroughly: Always wash local vegetables thoroughly to remove harmful pesticides.

  • No Spices: All boiled proteins (egg, chicken) must be unseasoned. No salt, no oil and should be no larger than your thumbnail!

Pregnancy & Nursing Diet

When a hamster is pregnant or lactating, her nutritional needs skyrocket. To ensure healthy pups and prevent the mother from stressing or culling her litter, you must temporarily adjust her daily diet (for first 14 days).

Daily Protein Boost

Protein must jump to 20-24%. Add a protein source (boiled egg, plain chicken, dried shrimp, mealworms, or tofu) every single day, not just 4 days a week.

Increase Calcium

Vital for the pups' bone development and the mother's milk production. Offer a small spoonful of plain unsweetened yogurt, mild low-sodium cheese, or add a bird cuttlebone to the cage.

Extra Fat & Energy

Nursing drains energy. Slightly increase her sunflower/pumpkin seed allowance, or offer a pinch of flaxseeds or plain, water-cooked oats (no sugar/salt)

Abundance & Hydration

A mother will hoard more food to prepare. Double her daily seed mix portion so she never feels food is scarce. Ensure her water bottle is strictly full at all times.

Upgrading her food is only half the battle. For the first 10 to 14 days after giving birth: Do not clean the cage, do not touch the babies, and do not disturb the nest. Quietly give her high-protein food and fresh water into the cage and leave her completely alone. Stress is the #1 cause of lost litters.
